Droplets by Mike Young and Jim McColl

Mike Young is Professor of Water Economics and Management at the University of Adelaide. Jim McColl is a Research Fellow at CSIRO. Every few weeks Mike and Jim write a "droplet" that explores an idea about alternative ways that water sources could be managed.

A future-proofed Basin

Mike Young and Jim McColl suuggest that to fix the Basin’s problems, it is necessary to put a new system in place that is designed to cope with whatever climatic conditions the future brings. They aregue that now is the time to:
1. Replace the current entitlement and allocation regime with a robust one that can be confidently explained as one that will work – work no matter what climatic future arrives.
2. Implement the resultant change in a just and fair manner.

Pricing your water: Is there a smart way of doing it?

In Droplet 10, Mike Young and Jim McColl present their views on better ways to charge for water in urban area to ensure supply meets demand in times of water scarcity. Click on the link on the right to read the blog and listen to the podcast.

New Water for Old: Speeding up the reform process

I interviewed Mike Young and Jim McColl on their new Droplet, New Water for Old: Speeding Up the Reform Process. In their Droplet, they have put forward the proposition that we need to reform water entitlements, plans and registers at the same time. Of all the things to be concerned about with Australia’s water, I was intrigued about why this was so important, when we could be investing in infrastructure for new sources of water (such as stormwater recycling and desalination) or demand management (reducing per capita water use).
